Take the first step towards therapy.
what happens at an assessment?
Making the decision to reach out to a psychological therapist is a big one. Often it comes after a long period of contemplation and also with some fears or worries as to whether it is the correct decision. The assessment is designed so that you can have a conversation with a psychological therapist that will identify whether talking therapies are right for you or right for you at this moment. It also aims to identify your main issues of concern, your goals for therapy/treatment, what an individualised treatment plan would look like for you and whether this particular therapist is a right fit for you.
Your psychological therapist may ask about the areas of your life that are most challenging at present, some questions about your history, what has helped or not helped in the past and how you would like your life/experiences to look and feel different.
Psychological therapy is a collaborative process, your therapist will come with technical knowledge, compassion and understanding and you will be the expert on your experience.
At the end of the assessment the psychological therapist or psychologist will recommend a treatment plan which will be evidence based and tailored to your needs. They will explain how may sessions and at what frequency is recommended and you will be given the space and time to both ask questions and consider the options.
Psychological Therapy
Individual psychological therapy sessions are typically 50 minutes long and on a weekly or fortnightly basis. They will follow and evidence based structure and modality but will be flexible to meet your needs and the complexities of life.
Treatment sessions will feel like a natural follow on from the assessment where you and your therapist will develop a fuller understanding of the issue(s) at hand and formulate both their origin and new ways of coping or making changes. This remains a collaborative process at all times and should always be taken at a pace that feels safe.
The main therapy modes I draw on are Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Systemic Therapy. I am also informed by Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), and Schema Therapy.
